The 49ers start the season with QB Alex Smith ready to go – all he needs is a stronger receiving crew. Eyes are on RB Frank Gore this season, who will fight for yardage and has put past injuries behind him. In spite of not making the playoffs last season, ticket holders to Monster Park have their hopes set high for ’07 – after all, their offence is younger and stronger, and their defense upgraded. The 49ers definitely promise to be contenders this season.
The San Francisco 49ers have to be one of, if not the, greatest franchise in the league, in terms of winning. The team, which first started in the now extinct AAFC, didn't do too much in its early days. It wasn't until before the 1979 season that a young, up-and-coming coach, Bill Walsh would change all of that.
He came in and changed the culture of the team. He also drafted players like quarterback Joe Montana, defensive end Charles Haley, safety Ronnie Lott, and wide receiver Jerry Rice. Montana is thought, by many, to be the best quarterback the world has seen and Rice is, hands down, the best receiver the league has seen. Rice owns almost every possible receiving record for the NFL. During that run in the 80s under Walsh (1979-'88) they won four Super Bowls and established dominance.
Defensive coordinator George Seifert then took over the reigns of the team when Walsh was done. He went on to win two more Super Bowls. His final time hoisting the Lombardi Trophy came in 1994 when his team, led by quarterback Steve Young, dominated the San Diego Chargers.
These days the team is led by Mike Nolan, who is the son of Dick Nolan, the coach of the 49ers from 1968-'75. On the field, quarterback Alex Smith is supposed to be the next great signal caller for the franchise. He'll have some good help from running back Frank Gore.
