In 1972, the Miami Dolphins accomplished a feat that has yet to be duplicated; they completed a season without losing. Back then it was only a 14 game schedule, but they also swept their way through the playoffs and into the Super Bowl. The team was led by Hall of Fame head coach Don Shula. To this day, when a team is challenging that record a group of the players from that magical ’72 squad will show up and watch the game. If the team wins, they’ll go to next week’s game, and if they lose, they pop champagne in celebration that the ’72 Dolphins are the only group to go undefeated in NFL history.
In 1983, they drafted quarterback Dan Marino and he was the face of the franchise for decades, but he never won a Super Bowl. He captured almost every NFL passing record, but he could never get a Super Bowl ring. Marino made it to the big game once in 1984, but was out dueled by another quarterback that went by the name of Montana. Marino threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown, but had 2 interceptions to go along with that. Since Marino’s retirement, the team has struggled quite a bit, by missing the playoffs for consecutive years (2002-’05) for the first time since 1988-89.
The franchise is putting their hopes into Head Coach Nick Saban, who is a first time head coach that came up from the college ranks. Saban seems like the kind of guy that can turn the Miami franchise around. With young talent like running back Ronnie Brown, wide out Chris Chambers and quarterback Daunte Culpepper he should be able to accomplish that mission.
