The Carolina Panthers are one of the younger franchises in the National Football League, completing their first full decade after the 2004 season. They shocked a number people in 1996 when they won the highly competitive NFC West in their second season of existence. Seven years later, they shocked the world again by winning their second division championship, this time the NFC South crown over teams like Tampa Bay, the defending Super Bowl champions. The 1996 playoff run ended in the second round, after they knocked off the Dallas Cowboys, but the 2003 season was a little more prolonged. They rolled through a Bill Parcells led Dallas team and Andy Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles on their way to their first Super Bowl appearance. They met up with the New England Patriots, who were looking to start a dynasty with their quarterback Tom Brady. The game was one of the best in the history of the Super Bowl. The teams stepped in and fought it out like a couple of heavyweights. In the end, the Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri booted a field goal with time running out to put his team up 32-29. This set the foundation for the franchise from there on out.
The team is led by quarterback Jake Delhomme and will be the QB of the team for years to come. Steve Smith is his favorite receiver and has proved to be one of the best in the league. Head coach John Fox has put a premium on the defense and that’s what they will live and die with. If you had players like defensive end Julius Peppers and linebacker Dan Morgan on your team you would too.
