Soccer is becoming a more popular sport here in the United States, and the 2023 year is sure to help that popularity out. The homegrown Major League Soccer (MLS) league is entering its 9 th season here in the states, and more international players are taking it seriously and joining now. The MLS has also been a building block for many young players looking to advance in the game by joining up with a European team. The biggest example came last year when NY/NJ Metrostars goalie Tim Howard was signed by soccer giant Manchester United of England. United is easily the biggest name in soccer, and could carry more popularity world-wide than then New York Yankees, so to see an American player signed and playing gives even more recognition to the MLS.
Manchester United is also helping with soccer in the states by making their second annual USA Tour in 2004. They played four games here in 2003 and each sold out quickly. The players received respect they didn’t really expect from the knowledgeable soccer fans of America, and they’ll play three games in the states in the summer of 2004. United come off a disappointing season by their standards, finishing 3 rd in the league and being knocked out in the earlier rounds of the Champions League, but they’re popularity is still at its peak, and the American fans are sure to give them the respect they deserve.
