Ravens Vs Patriots
Reliant Stadium: Houston, Texas
After the merger of the AFL and the NFL, the new and improved NFL began introducing championship games in the AFC and NFC for the chance to play in the Super Bowl, the sport’s showcase game. In 1970, the league’s first year with the championship games, the AFC championship pitted the Baltimore Colts against the Oakland Raiders with the Colts coming out of the game with a hard fought 17-17 victory. The next three years saw the Miami Dolphins take down the Colts, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Raiders in three consecutive years. The second team, the 1972 Dolphins, beat the Steelers 21-17 on their way to a perfect season that finished with a Super Bowl win. After the Dolphins had their three year run, the Pittsburgh Steelers won four championships in six years. The “Steel Curtain” won two AFC championship games, then lost to the Raiders, then missed the game while the Denver Broncos beat the Raiders before they won the following two championship games over the Houston Oilers. Over the next six years, the Dolphins and Raiders each won two AFC championship games while the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots each won a Super Bowl appearance. Starting in 1986, the Denver Broncos won three of four championship games (all over the Cleveland Browns) while the Bengals beat the Buffalo Bills in the other game in the 1980s.
