In 2004, NASCAR made a switch in promoters, changing from Winston to Nextel, and changing the name of its series of races to the “Nextel Cup Series”. NASCAR also consists of the Busch Series and the Craftsman Truck Series, leagues that compare to that of a minor league system. In 2004, the Nextel Cup will race a total of 36 races, most notably the Daytona 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. The Daytona 500 is like the Super Bowl of NASCAR, and the Nextel Cup is the only sport in recent history to put their biggest event at the front of the schedule.
The Coca-Cola 600 takes place on the same day as the Indianapolis 500, probably the biggest race in the racing world. In recent years, Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon, NASCAR racers, have made the attempt to cross over and race both in the same day, spanning a total 1,100 miles. Both have helicopters waiting for them immediately after the conclusion of the Indy 500 that take them to the NASCAR race which takes place that night. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Little E), Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart are the most recognizable racers, but if they want to win the championship in 2004, they’ll have to race their best to dethrone 2003 champion Matt Kenseth.
