The tennis season is in full swing for both the men and the women. In late January, both the men and women went to Melbourne, Australia to compete for the Australian Open, the year’s first major. The number one seeds on both sides took the titles as Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium beat her countrywoman Kim Clijsters in the final on the women’s side and Roger Federer of Switzerland beat Russian Marat Safin. In the French Open, played from late May into early June, unseeded Argentine Gaston Gaudio shocked third-seeded countrymen Guillermo Coria in a five-set thriller and Russian sixth-seeded Anastasia Myskina beat fellow Russian Elena Dementieva convincingly.
The other two majors, Wimbledon and the US Open, are quite open on both sides. Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters won’t be at Wimbledon and are questionable at the Open, so the obvious favorites would have to be Serena and Venus Williams, two Americans that can take advantage of their strength at both sites. On the men’s side, Roger Federer will look to continue his dominance, but American Andy Roddick will look to take the next step at Wimbledon after falling in last year’s semis and will also attempt to repeat at the US Open.
