The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club will once again host The Championships, Wimbledon 2004. In 2003, Swiss Roger Federer defeated Aussie Mark Philippousis in straight sets and Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in three sets. It was the fifth consecutive year that an American has played in the women’s final, and the fourth straight that Venus has played in. It was also a successful defense of the title for Serena.
In 2004, the championship looks up for grabs on the women’s side of the draw. Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, both from Belgium and ranked 1 and 2 in the world, are absent due to injury, so it looks like the Americans could really dominate this tournament. Serena and Venus will be joined by Americans Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport in the hunt for a title. Roger Federer and American Andy Roddick are the early favorites to take the championship, but Britain will be pulling for their homegrown star Tim Henman. Henman will again have the weight of a country on his shoulders, but he’ll have a tough time dethroning Federer from his pedestal. Americans Pete Sampras and Martina Navratilova own 7 and 9 Wimbledon trophies respectively to set the career record.
