The 2004 US Open will be held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York from August 30-September 12. Last year, Justine Henin-Hardenne beat Kim Clijsters on the women’s side, and Andy Roddick beat Juan Carlos Ferrero on the men’s side. The US Open is the only major that is open to amateurs and professionals alike and is already in it’s 123 rd year as a tournament in tennis. Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras each won 5 US Opens, setting the individual record in the modern era for the men. Chris Evert leads the women by winning 6 in the same era.
The US Open is one of the last tournaments of the year, so the players have usually established a rhythm coming into the tournament. The Open is also known for its night matches taking place in primetime television. Andy Roddick took the title last year and will look to repeat as champion in the only major championship he’s won in his young career. Any of the American women are capable of winning it all, but if Serena Williams is fully healthy, she’ll be tough to beat.
