The golf season is well underway and it’s looking like this could be a year to remember. Phil Mickelson finally got the proverbial “monkey” off his back by winning the Masters for his first major championship. Tiger Woods is still the world’s number one player, even though he’s been in a drought since his knee surgery in 2003. Ernie Els and Vijay Singh continue to battle each other for world number two, and each has to be considered a strong contender for majors along the way.
Each of the four majors was won by a first-time major winner in 2003 (Mike Weir, Jim Furyk, Ben Curtis, and Shaun Micheel). The 2004 US Open will take place at Shinnecock Hills in New York, the British Open will be held at Royal Troon Golf Club in Glasgow, and the PGA Championship will be hosted by Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. The golfing world is still waiting for Tiger Woods to resurface as the force he was in 2001, but if he continues to falter in the majors, it’s likely he’ll lose the number one ranking he’s held for years.
