The boxing match that every fan has their eye on will likely take place September 18 th in Las Vegas when “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya will try to dethrone Bernard Hopkins from the pedestal of the middleweight division. Hopkins will enter the match 44-2-1 with 31 knockouts and De La Hoya will be 37-3 with 29 knockouts. The contract has been signed for months, and each had to get by a lesser opponent to reach the marquee match up.
Hopkins, the undisputed middleweight champion, easily dispatched Robert Allen, but De La Hoya struggled in his middleweight debut against Felix Sturm, and had to count on the scorecards to get by in a unanimous decision. Many unofficial judges actually disputed the result, and felt that Sturm was quite unlucky to walk away with a defeat. Hopkins is a comfortable middleweight, and even at age 39, showed no signs of fatigue or aging. De La Hoya, only 31, has moved up in weight classes six times over his career (27 pounds heavier than his pro debut), and looked slower than the Oscar of old. Sturm would like a rematch against Oscar, but financial obligations probably won’t allow that to happen any time soon. De La Hoya is expected to make close to $30 million for the Hopkins fight with the champ making about $10 million as well. If De La Hoya did break his contract for the September fight, it would cost him $3 million directly to Hopkins.
